Adrienne Martine-Barnes

Adrienne Martine-Barnes was born to David Alexander Martinez and Margaret Amedea (Obegi) Martinez in Los Angeles, California, on January 19, 1942. She grew up in the Los Angeles area, later living in New York City, Oakland, California, and Portland, Oregon. She died in Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland on July 20, 2015. She was first married to Ronald Hicks, with whom she had a son, Geoffrey (wife Audrey), and one grandson, Henry Hicks, of Bloomington, Indiana, who survive. She later married Larry Barnes, who disappeared while camping in the California mountains and is presumed to have predeceased her.

Adrienne attended the University of Redlands for a year and UCLA for another but never completed her degree. She loved medieval times and the worlds of fantasy and science fiction. During her lifetime, she published a dozen novels and nine short stories, including the four-book Chronique D'Avebury, The Dragon Rises, and the non-genre novel, Never Speak of Love. In addition to those books authored independently, she wrote three books for the Darkover series with Marion Zimmer Bradley. She also collaborated with Diana L. Paxson on a trilogy about the Irish hero Fionn MacCumhal. She was a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America, and was active in SF fandom, known especially for some of her costume work in convention masquerades. She was also very active in the Society for Creative Anachronism, devoted to researching and recreating aspects of medieval life in Europe, during its early years. Among her roles there was serving as first queen of the East Kingdom. She had considerable expertise in the life and times of Eleanor of Aquitaine and was well know for her knowledge of medieval cooking and costume.

Adrienne was loved for her wit, intellect, and creativity. She was a wry conversationalist to the end of her days, telling one loved-one that she wanted to "fly away from old age on a magic carpet." She was unabashedly magical!

In accordance with her request to be near family, Adrienne was buried in Kingman, Indiana. There will be a memorial gathering in her honor at Greyhaven in Berkeley, California, on August 16.
