Anita Carol Anthony Mills, age 87, died July 9, 2023, from complications of Alzheimer's disease and congestive heart failure. Carol's childhood was primarily in Indiana, and as an adult she lived more than 20 years in Terre Haute. She graduated from Indiana State Teachers College (today, Indiana State University) and married fellow graduate Wayne Mills in 1956. Carol taught high school home economics and English in Cory, Ind., for three years, prior to raising children Michael and Alice. She later retired from the pharmaceutical industry after many years as a clinical data analyst in Waukegan, Ill., and Wilmington, Del. After the death of her husband, Carol reconnected with high school sweetheart Tom Lane. In her final two years, Carol resided in assisted living near her daughter in Kansas.
Carol liked pumpkin pie with coffee for breakfast, margaritas and popcorn anytime, holiday gatherings with family, the color yellow, lilies of the valley, singing, reading, writing, comedy, a clean and organized home, attending her son's baseball games and daughter's piano recitals and sister's musical theater productions, crossword and Sudoku puzzles, Scrabble with her father-in-law, playing euchre, walking briskly, sitting on the front porch swing during a summer thunderstorm, watching dog agility trials on TV, and observing nature through a window from a comfortable indoor space. Carol was fortunate to have many travel opportunities, including: three months in Geneva, Switzerland, for work; New York City with her sister; cruises to New Zealand and Alaska; Mexico with her mother and daughter; Bahamas with her husband; Canada with her brother; and many other U.S. states with family and friends.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Bonnie Cremonie and Herbert Anthony, her husband Wayne, brothers Duane and George, and partner Tom Lane. She also leaves behind grandsons Jesse and Leo, her son and daughter-in-law Lynn, daughter and son-in-law Patrick Martin, sister Angie and brother-in-law Paul, and many much-loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
