Betty Jane Weliever Moffitt was born January 26, 1946, first born daughter of Richard C. and Mildred Maye Quigg Weliever. She was raised on a farm south of Darlington and graduated from Darlington High School in 1964. She attended Indiana State University for one year. Betty and Samuel Hugh Moffitt were married August 29, 1965, with the promise to her dad that she would finish college. Betty graduated from Purdue University in 1968 and later received her Master's degree from Indiana State University. She taught elementary education at Linden, Darlington, Waynetown and Sommer. Many of her former students remember "Little Miss Moffitt."
Betty and Sam are the parents of two sons: Shane (Lynn) of Waynetown and Travis (Amanda) of rural Romney and the proud grandparents of Kylie, Marisa, Gabrielle and Ethan. Betty was an excellent mother and outstanding Grandma who loved having her family around.
Betty passed on to heaven Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Lafayette Franciscan Hospital. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Sam, her sons and daughters-in-law who she loved and her grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Charles (Roberta) of Brazil and Bob (Cathy) of Darlington; her sisters, Mary Lou of Darlington, Donna (Dean) Miller of Darlington, Nancy (Jason Douglas) of Darlington and Susie (Chris) Birdsong of Crawfordsville. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and one great-great niece. Preceding her death were her parents and niece, Kristine Weliever.
Betty was a long-time active member of Liberty Chapel Church and enjoyed her many friendships there. She was a resident of Waynetown and enjoyed her family life there, but at heart she was always a Darlington girl. She is deeply loved and sadly missed.
