Emily "Adrene" Brown

Emily Adrene Andrews Brown, 86, of Tangier, Indiana, passed away peacefully while listening to her favorite hymns on September 2, 2026, at Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville.

She was born on August 30, 1940, to Emory and Lucile (Rose) Andrews in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Adrene married Parke Miles Brown on January 28, 1968. They had 50 loving years together until his passing on May 12, 2018.

Adrene studied French and Spanish earning her bachelor's degree from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1962 and her master's degree from Appalachian State College in Boone, North Carolina in 1967. She was a foreign language and English teacher in North Carolina, Virginia and Indiana. She retired in 1995 after 33 years of teaching and joined the Parke-Vermillion Retired Teachers Association. However, after four years of retirement, Rockville, Indiana called her and wanted her to teach at the high school there. She taught foreign language there for six years and retired for a second time in the spring of 2005.

During her 39 years of teaching of foreign languages, she chaperoned several student trips to France and Spain.

Much of her summer vacation was spent traveling to state fairs and other events, helping Parke with the showing of the Woodland Clydesdale horses and the six-horse hitch.

Adrene was a birthright member of the Goldsboro Friends Meeting and a long-time active member of the Tangier Friends Meeting.

She was blessed with musical talent and shared her gift as a member of the Parke County Chorus, which was a part of the Melody Makers Chorus of Indiana. She also served as choir director for the Tangier Church.

Adrene is survived by her brother, Wiley Edwin Bud (Dianne) Andrews of Smithfield, North Carolina; sister, Louise Andrews Clark of Raleigh, North Carolina; brother-in-law, Jack Bartle also of Raleigh; and sister-in-law, Mary Brown Woods of Tangier. She will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews and their families in North Carolina and Indiana.

Adrene's sweet smile and demeanor have made a lasting impression on all whose lives she has touched.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Parke; older twin sisters, Janice Andrews and Janet Andrews Nichols; and younger sister, Elizabeth Bartle.

Cremation was chosen with a memorial visitation on Friday, September 18 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sanders Funeral Care in Kingman. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Tangier Friends Church, followed by a graveside service at the Tangier Cemetery.

Additional services will be held in Goldsboro, North Carolina at a later date. Arrangements will be handled by Seymour Funeral Home.

The cremains of Parke and Adrene are to be co-mingled. Half of them are to be buried in the Tangier Cemetery, the other half to be interred in the Andrews family plot in the Salem Cemetery near Goldsboro.
