Harold Lee Carpenter

Harold Lee Carpenter, 85, passed away surrounded by family at St. Vincent Hospital on September 9, 2026. He was born on September 21, 1940, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, to Ralph and Nelda Binford Carpenter.

Harold married Linda Groves on October 1, 1961, and together they shared nearly 65 years of marriage. He graduated from Bailey Technical School in St. Louis and worked as a mechanic. He farmed for 54 years and also owned and operated Carpenter Trenching and Electric. Harold was a member of Darlington Christian Church.

Harold never stopped moving. He loved to tinker and could fix just about anything, usually without ever reading the instructions or asking anyone for help. He loved everything John Deere, working on his antique tractors, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; his three children, Kevin Carpenter, Kelly Taylor (Dan), and Kathi Wilson (Guy); and his five grandchildren, Gabrielle Bargeloh (Chad), Maggie Pitre (Christopher), Brant Wilson, Olivia Wilson, and Lillie Taylor. He is also survived by his brothers, Jack Carpenter, Bill Carpenter (Nancy), Jim Carpenter, and Kenny Carpenter (Terri), with whom he loved sharing breakfast on the second Sunday of every month. Other survivors include his sister-in-law, Jan Carpenter; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Nelda Carpenter; his brother, Don Carpenter; and his in-laws, Robert and Margaret Groves.

A visitation will be held for Harold at Sanders Funeral Care, 315 S Washington Street in Crawfordsville on Monday, September 14, 2026 from 3:00 pm until the time of the service at 6:00 pm with Pastor Mike Whitacre officiating. A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery in Darlington on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 11:00 am.
