Mr. James Russell Powers, 91, passed away Saturday at 5:10 PM at the Williamsburg Healthcare. He was born August 24, 1920, in rural Putnam County, to Ed and Lucile (Woodrum) Powers. He married Margaret Ann Edwards on July 27, 1947 in Roachdale. She preceded him in death September 1, 2008.

Mr. Powers had owned and operated with his wife the Powers Funeral Homes in Crawfordsville and New Market. He also served as the Montgomery County Coroner for 15 years. He was a 1938 graduate of New Market High School and a 1946 graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Indianapolis. He was a U S Army Veteran serving in the Pacific Theater from 1942 until 1945. His memberships included the : Indiana Funeral Directors Association; Crawfordsville Lions Club, where he served in several local and district leadership roles; VFW and American Legion Posts of Crawfordsville; and The Trinity United Methodist Church, Crawfordsville.

He is survived by his children: Virginia (James) Servies and Steven (Linda) Powers, both of Crawfordsville. Also surviving are grandchildren: Natalie (Michael) Ward, Indianapolis; Alyssa (Ed) McGaughey, Crawfordsville; and great grandchildren: Dean McGaughey and Mason Ward. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Floyd; and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 21, at 10:00 AM, at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville. Burial will be at the Indian Creek Hill Cemetery, New Market. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 20, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the American Legion and VFW Posts of Crawfordsville.
