James Russell Shillings, age 81, of Crawfordsville, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Avon Health and Rehabilitation. He was born on November 5, 1944, in Crawfordsville to the late James Ross and Ruth Marie (Henry) Shillings.
Jim attended New Ross High School and received his GED while serving in the United States Navy. He dedicated 35 years of his career to Raybestos as a Tool, Die, and Gauge Maker.
He was a member of the Masonic Temple for over 50 years and spent more than 30 years as a 1700's historic reenactor. Jim served as Scout Master for Troop 326 in Waynetown and was a lifelong mountain man and outdoorsman. He had a natural ear for music and mastered the echo harmonica, squeeze box, dulcimer, and was an excellent whistler.
Jim was passionate about blacksmithing and owned Ghost Forge, reflecting his love of the outdoors and 1700's rendezvous. He enjoyed sharing music and laughter with campers and fellow reenactors. His passions included hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, and camping, which he shared with his family.
He was known for his ability to learn new skills and build anything he set his mind to. His curiosity was matched by his humor, and he took joy in making others laugh. Jim could often be seen riding around town on his scooter with his chrome helmet and kilt.
He will be deeply missed by his son, James Randall (Aubrey) Shillings; daughter, Sandy (Don) Murray; brother, Thomas Darrell (Lynn) Shillings; grandchildren, Jacob Riley and Judd Alexander; and former wife, Debbie Yost.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Sanders Funeral Care, 315 S. Washington Street in Crawfordsville, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm with Masonic Rites. Graveside service will follow at Freedom Cemetery with Military Honors by the United States Navy and American Legion Post 72 Honor Guard.

It is only fitting to close with Jim's favorite dad joke: "Ever notice when geese fly in a V, one side is longer? Know why? ...Because there are more geese on that side."
