Walter Riley Mason, age 101, of Crawfordsville passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at Hickory Creek Nursing home. He was born in Crawfordsville on January 14, 1919 to the late Findley and Roxie May (Gray) Mason.
Walter attended Crawfordsville High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. During this time, he earned two Bronze Stars. On March 2, 1946, he married Ellen Cecelia Thompson, who preceded him in death on February 21, 2015. He worked as a pressman at RR Donnelleys for 34 years. He was a member of Whitesville Christian Church, American Legion, and 40 & 8. Walter was a homebody, who loved to be outdoors mowing or watching the animals. He enjoyed the simple things like driving on his old tractor.
Walter is survived by a son, David (Deb) Mason; two daughters, Janet (Bob) Stull and Joann Cline; Nine grandchildren, Dave Mason II, Ryan Yerkes, Amy (Ryan) Stewart, Aaron (Kari) Yerkes, Rob Stull II, Scott (Wendy) Stull, and Steven, James, and Matt Cline; eleven great-grandchildren, Ian, Lyra, Libby, Brooke, Brayden, Hudson, Harper, Graham, Blair, James, and Christopher; and one great-great-grandson.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ellen; brother, John Mason; sister, Elfrida “Peg” Knox; three granddaughters, Christy Williams, Roxie June, and Sarah Ellen; and one great-granddaughter, Loren Williams.
There will be a visitation at Sanders Priebe Funeral Care, 315 S. Washington Street in Crawfordsville, on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 from 11:00 am until the time of funeral service at 1:00 pm with Pastor Mark Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Mace Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Kidney Disease Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852.
